Asset creation - Street Lamp model

Hey there this post here to talk about the model I made today for my game level and the process of how I created it.

Now depending on the type of street lamp you want to make mine is a simple base with a post and a hexagon like head but this can change on the street lamp you want to make. Now you start with a sphere and make it as big as necessary make sure you turn off smooth and then bring down the faces to about eight and then turn it into an edible poly select the faces on the bottom of the sphere and then delete them use the edge toll to select and cap the bottom. Now select the top vertices and bring it down in line with the ones below it this make the top now flat so you can make your post, select the ring of edges in the middle and use the connect tool to make a inner circle this will be your post it you click the button next to the connect button then you can make the circle as big as you want. Select the inner circle faces and use the extrude tool to make your post you can make it as tall as you want, now I selected the bases faces and used the scale tool to shape it to look better.

I made another sphere like the first and then selecting faces from the middle down I shaped it to look like the head of a lamp (Like in the image above), if you look at street lamp at the top of the page then you will see that it had a metal casing around the glass to simulate this I used the edge tool to select the top and bottom edges from the middle faces of the lamp then used the connect tool to make two line on ether side of the middle line to simulate the metal casing since the faces in the middle of these lines are going to be where the glass texture will be applied.

The model is done I also selected the bottom faces and beveled it so make the bottom part of the head of the model to make it point outwards to give it more character. With texturing I just used the UVW maping to fit the texture and it came out all right (as seen above) but if I was doing a high res model I would use the unrap to fit the texture to the model, but I am happy with how it turned out.

Summarize of Game Level

I've now completed my game level and uploaded a walkthrough of the level to vimeo and now I've been asked to do a summery of my level. There was a number of things that I could have done better one would be that I should have created more assets for my level to populate the level small things like a cart or lamps to add to the street to make the shadows more defined in the level to sneak through.

Another problem I had was with texturing the level I ether didn't have a texture I wanted or didn't apply it to the object correctly, an example would be the gate I created when I added the texture I used the UVM mapping to try and fit the texture to the archway of the gate and through you might not be able to see it there is a section where the texture gets blurred and stretched taking away from the rest of the model which looks alright I did try using the UV unrap to try and fix this problem but it just stretched the rest of the texture so I want back to the original way I textured it, maybe if I used the unrap differently I could have had the texture placed perfectly around the model. Something I didn't like was some of the textures I used like the bland concrete texture that I added to the buildings I had in the level, I was looking for a concrete texture that is like the classic half wood buildings of Germany like the picture below.

Other then my Textures I also wanted to make some more models for the world as I said at the top of the post. One model I wanted to make was a lamp to add some light to the world and make the shadows more defined and adding to the atmosphere of the level and making it seem like that character is a thief in a dark and dangerous city I'd have to use a spotlight pointing down and widen it's parameters so it lights up a small area around it to simulate the light coming from the lamp.

The buildings that populate the level are two buildings and my barracks that I have ether moved or reshaped to look different I'd like to make a couple more to make it seem less bland. But I still am happy with the buildings because if you look at the buildings like the one above or in London 1800's most of the buildings are the same building so I'm happy with what I have.

There is stuff that I need to improve to make the game look at good as possible but with what I have I'm still happy with what I produced but I will make improvements to the level after I submit it adding some models for the environment and improve the textures so I can produce a better game level for next time I have to create one.

Original objective for game level

After thinking I have decided to change my Objective for new ones just so it is easier to finish the level on time down below is the original objective for my Game Level.

Objective 1 is having to steal a key from a commander that opens the exit from the area. Objective 2 is unlocking a locked crate that holds a new item the Fire arrows which play a role in the level latter in the game. Objective 3 will be disabling a generator that powers the surrounding area making more shadows letting you move around easier. Objective 4 is destroying weapons supplies that belong to the guard of the city, Objective 5 is causing a distraction that will allow you to escape from the area by blowing up a cart full of barrels filled with lighter oil.

Asset Creation

Hey there Decided to post my process of creating an Archway with a gate for my Game Level. First I made a box making it the size I needed to fit in my level and then started selecting the edges to connect them and start forming my arch using the vertices.

After saving my progress as a different save and the one I already had I selected the faces on both side to hollow out the arch. I then open the other save I deleted the all the other faces then the one that was shaped as a door I extruded it to the size I want my door to be.

To make the handle I made a small box the size of a handle and then selected the top edge on the side of the box, after using the connect tool to make to new edges on the side I select the side faces and bridge them to hollow it out then threw a bend modifier to give the handle a curve made a copy and then placed on the other side of the door.

Opening the save with the arch I merged the door into it and then placed it in the middle of the arch. then from the Top view I selected the edges and used the connect tool to make new edges.

Allowing me to select the faces around the side and  extruded them to make parapets like from medieval castles. Texturing the arch, door and handles I have my finish point for my game level.

Lighting of level

lighting for my level will be kept simple for my level because it is set during night so the only light would be an atmospheric light coming from the moon. This would help create the atmosphere of a thief in the night which is an important part of the game.

I have also thought of adding street lamps to the level this would add to level in making the shadows more defined which is important to the gameplay as shadows are how the player gets around undetected also adding to the eerie atmosphere of the game.

Lighting is important to not only creating atmosphere but can also become a part of gameplay in new and interesting ways it isn't just something that makes the environment pretty it's now a part of the development process that needs just as much attention as ever with new engines coming out it is important that we use the techniques already learned with new ones so we can get as much as we can out of these engines so we can create the best gaming experience for our generation.

Audio List for gamelevel

This is an audio list of audio needed for my game level.

  • low wind sound for atmosphere
  • background sound (dogs barking/howling ect)
  • walking audio
Importing my sounds in to audition I began the process of editing the sounds to use for my game level. the first sound is my walking audio, I begin by cutting the a small section of the audio to get rid of our voices at the start of the recording I then go through the audio to find any other background sounds to get edit them out I find another section that I need to silence since our voices come through the sound again after edit this I set the a hard limiter effect so that the level don't go into the red. I then raise the sounds output so that it can be heard more clearly in the unity level. I do the same thing to my other sounds add a hard limiter and rise or lower the sounds so they can be heard more clearly I also use the fade in and out tool on the Wind audio so there is a seamless entry and exit of the sound while I have it looping in the level.

Sadly after adding the sounds It seems that they don't come through as cleanly as I wanted while you can hear the wind and dog audio the walking has become very quite making it hard to hear and when I recorded my walkthrough with the program Fraps none of the sounds can be heard I did add the dog howling to the video to demonstrate where it would come in and what it sounds like but sadly I ran out of time to add the other sounds.

I will see about improving the sounds and seeing where I went wrong to make sure I don't make the same mistake again when making future games and levels for my games.

(this is all the sound I need for my level at the moment but will be updated if needed.)

OHS Workbook

CUF50207 Diploma of Interactive Digital Media

“OHS Safe Workplace” Workbook
(
Ensure Safe Workplace BSBOHS509)

Student Name:Blair Findlay
Student Number:1103929113
Date:7/05/14

1.  GENERAL QUESTIONS

SBIT Policy

1.   Where can you find the OHS policies for SBIT Employees and Students?
I coudn't find the OH&S policies, the only reference i could find was on the SBIT website on the student handbook that stated that "Students had a reponsibility to work safetly."

2.   Identify three ways you could communicate these policies to SBIT Employees and Students?
A student Guidelines booklet would underline the main components of your Duty of Care as a student.
Another is a online PDF/document that has all guidelines as a student/teacher as well as what is expected of you. The final way to communicate these policies is to hold a meeting explaining some of the finer points of the policies and what you as a student/teacher can do to improve on these policies and what they can do better.

3.   Explain what is meant by “Duty of Care”.

The legal obligation to safeguard others from harm while they are in your care, using your services, or exposed to your activities i.e. your hospital has a duty of care to you and your baby.

Legislation
4.   Identify the relevant OHS legislative and where it is applicable.

Legislation
How it is applicable

5.   When was “Safe Work Australia Council” formed and what is the address of their web site?

The Safe work Australia council was formed on the 31st of march 2009 their website address is www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au

6.   What is the role of Safe Work Australia?

·         raise awareness of work health and safety as a key issue in the community
·         improve work health and safety, by understanding what influences Australian workplace cultures and then putting in place mechanisms to effect change
·         harmonise work health and safety laws throughout Australia
·         develop national work health and safety and workers’ compensation policy, and
·         identify opportunities for improvement in workers’ compensation arrangements.
This is achieved by:
·         promoting work health and safety through events including National Safe Work Australia Week and the annual Safe Work Australia Awards
·         developing, implementing and driving the new National Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012–2022
·         developing, implementing and monitoring the harmonised work health and safety framework
·         developing and implementing the National Workers’ Compensation Action Plan 2010–2013
·         developing and maintaining collaborative Australian and international partnerships on work health and safety, and
·         monitoring, collecting, analysing and reporting on research and data for work health and safety and workers’ compensation policy development and evaluation.

7.   What is the purpose of the “New National OHS Framework?
the purpose of the New National OHS Framework is to achieve greater national consistency across OHS jurisdictions' regulatory frameworks.

8.   What are the 5 national policies under the “National OHS Strategy 2002 – 2012”?

Five of the national policies are
  • National standards declared by the ASCC that will be the basis for jurisdictional regulations. National standards will be focused on safety and health requirements and will be specified as safety outcomes where possible.
  • National codes of practice declared by the ASCC that will be the basis for jurisdictional approved codes of practice. The codes will provide more focused practical guidance on how to meet a safety outcome.
  • A core elements document that will provide the foundation for the consistent development of jurisdictional Acts and regulations by specifying the objects, principles and common general duties of care of a harmonised legislative system. It will guide those who draft, administer or are subject to OHS legislation to understand the intent of a nationally consistent OHS regulatory framework.
  • A handbook that will document the agreed approach of the ASCC to the governance of the National Framework. It will describe the key components and the processes for their development, implementation and review.
  • Guidance material.

3.  OHSMS CREATION / REPORT

OHS Policy
The responsibilities for "THEFX" management team is to make sure all employee has
ample opportunity to work in a safe work environment. It is generally accepted that we will:

• provide a safe and healthy workplace and working conditions for all, including employees,
contractors, customers and visitors

• provide training to enable all employees to work safely

• comply with all relevant legislation and industry standards

• provide support and assistance to employees

• consult with staff and contractors where relevant to enhance the effectiveness of
procedures

• provide adequate resources to aid employees in fulfilling their

responsibilities

• conduct investigations into all reported incidents

• ensure that appropriate return to work programs are in place

• conduct regular reviews and evaluations of the health and safety systems

in place.

While at work all employees regardless of position are expected to:

• take reasonable care to ensure good health and safety procedures are
implemented at all times

• identify and support measures to eliminate or minimise unsafe conditions

• assume personal responsibility for their own safety and for those of other

work colleagues by always operating in a safe and appropriate manner.

"THEFX" has develop the procedures needed to follow.

·         Define OHS responsibilities for all workplace personnel in accordance with OHS policies, procedures and programs

Planning/Organisation
It is important that each individual know what their:

- What their "Duty of Care" is to follow employees
- Who they need to report to
- What authority they have in curtain situations
- What are their Health and Safety responsibilities are when required to know so as they
change depending on what job position they have within the company.

"THEFX" training courses that are compulsory for employees to understand what is
expected of them when working for "THEFX" and what to do when such an event happens.

Fire warden job responsibilities within the company

Organize fire Drills every Month
- In the event of an emergency fire they will evacuate building
- Talk to safety officer about new policies to be implemented at all times
- and fire equipment(extinguisher etc..) are working and Up to date

Occupational Health and Safety Officer

- Organize safety meetings
- Attend meetings involving new policies being implemented
- Make sure everyone is following OHS policies
- Make sure everyone is informed of new OHS policies and have up to date knowledge and
the correct training on new and current OHS policies
- To oversee all attempts of OHS being used
- To provide employees with the necessary equipment to use OHS policies
- Compile statistic reports on OHS policies and their effectiveness
- To provide advice on OHS policies and how employees can help with improving them
- Produce relative materials for OHS policies
- Provide a secure and safe workplace for all employees
- And co-ordinate with all other OHS organizations to produce the best policies and
materials for OHS

Implementation

The key duties of implementing the plan are meant for the senior management team, but "THEFX"
employees all have the responsibility to use and implement the plan in their work environment anyway
they can. "THEFX" management team are responsible for the implementation through the company.

Measurement and Evaluation
Financial and Human reaources

There are three main goals that "THEFX" likes to use for measuring performance;

1. Identify problem and evaluate best options to solve it with set goals and strategy
2. Identify course of problem and implement strategy, possibly review strategy
3. Identify flaws in strategy, identify areas for improvement and, Lack of improvement in areas
where improvement was needed as notified in previous reports

By measuring the performance it allows our company to assess the mistakes we have made and decide
on a budget based on the performance of our staff and how mistakes made affect the company yearly
profit intake.

It is important to budget the company so as not to waste money on people who don't need to be
trained in certain areas. This makes sure that those trained in an area like first aid would have all the
necessary training because money wasn't wasted on someone who didn't need the first aid training and
attend those training sessions instead on attending training that they would need to further their position in
 the company.

 Budget Cost
the set budget for OHS is set at $250,000.00 a year. Cost changes Budgeted $1,000.00 a year

Fire Extinguishers - Required yearly checks and when expired replacing - Cost Changes, budgeted -
$385.00
Fire Warden - salary $55,000.00 - $69,000.00 a year
Safety Officer - salary $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 a year
OHS training - $675.00

Management Review

It is important that management get involved in making the workplace a safer and fun enviroment
for all. We have installed a suggestion box in the staff room for employees to make anonymous
suggestions to help improve the environment they work in. We have also started weekly meeting
sessions and once a month we have a small weekend consultation with everyone so we can get together
with everyone so they can help this process along.

there are signs along hallways in the workplace indicating the correct way to lift Boxes, for example;

This sign indicates the correct procedures on how to life a box. these picture cards demonstrate the proper way to proceed in doing every aspect of each task within the company. Some
examples of those are;
- How to dispose of boxes into compactor
- What a area of the workplace should look like i.e the emergency exit shouldn't have and obsticals in the way of it
- and how to dispose of hazards materiel
these picture cards insure that all employees can maintain a safer environment.

if any OH&S hazards appear while employees are at work there are some simple steps so that we can
resolve these hazards in a effective and quick matter.

Step1. find hazard and quarantine the area till it can be fixed or safe to enter
Step2. find cause of incident
Step3. Talk about how the incident was caused and how it happened and get fixed
Step4. Resolve problem and write a report about:
           - Were the correct procedures taken if the procedures were broken
           - Have the correct safety checks started

A Image of "THEFX" Hazard report

It is inportant that a weekly inspection of "THEFX" workplace, the following inspection form it
to help in identerfiying majour areas.

We also have a risk managment report so that employees can inform us of the risk a possible hazard may repersent

Continual Improvement

Training Program

Each new employee will go through orientation, and will have to fill out a few forms to prove
their knowledge on Occupational  Health & Safety, these forms include;

- OHS basic
- Fire Safety
- How to use equipment safely and effectively
- Hazard procedures

There will be refresher courses every 6 months to ensure that everyone is up to standard
on these and any other training or changes to Occupational  Health & Safety legislation.

All forms will be stored physically on sight and electronically off and on sight."THEFX" has
an inbuilt system that stores the information electronically so that it can be accessed at any
time. Also if needed it automatically sends an email to OHS officer, in the occurrence of
an employee in needing to be retrained.

All Documents, procedures, policies and OHS forms, have all been checked and comply
with legal legislation.
